Pewi — Red

Red is the Pewi that turns up second-hand most often, which is a compliment to the frame rather than the color — these get passed between families because almost nothing on them wears out. The parts that do are the wheel sleeves and the grips, and both are easy to look at before a second child starts.

What a toddler gets here is their first properly independent machine. They choose the direction, they set the speed, and they stop by putting a foot down, which is a far more reliable brake at this age than any lever. Learning to stop with feet is also exactly the skill that carries over to a balance bike later, so nothing about the first two years is wasted effort.

It works on carpet, on floorboards and on a driveway, and it weighs little enough that the rider carries it between the three.
