Red and black is the second Explorer finish — the same three-wheel pedal go kart, the same adjustable frame and seat, the same hundred-and-fifty-five pound structural limit. The only difference is the paint and the volumes it has been produced in.

What makes a pedal car worth having alongside a bike is that it rewards a different set of skills. There is no balance to maintain, so the game becomes lines and corners: how late you can turn, how tight you can get round the bin, how much speed carries through. Children who have stopped practising and started racing want this machine, and the Explorer is built to take the kind of use that implies.

The seat adjusts far enough that a rider who starts on it at four is still comfortable at seven or eight.

Who it suits

Four and up, for a child who wants a lap time rather than a lesson.

One thing to know

This finish is routinely the scarcer of the two and has sat at a higher price than the blue for most of its life.

Awesome

“My son is 7 and has ZERO interest in learning how to ride a bike. But he love this thing. some days he calls it his race car, other days it's a train or roller coaster. I am so glad i found something that works for him.”

This trike is heavy duty.

“The frame length and seat position are adjustable for a wide range of sizes and ages. I'd say 4 years old is about the smallest size, and probably 12 is the largest. The components are typical Ybike, meaning they are well built and sturdy. My only fault with it is that the front pedalshaft bushings are kind of tight. You can feel the friction, which makes the unit harder to pedal for small kids.”

The size of the children using the YBIKE

“My grandkids will be using both YBIKES that we purchased. We had around 12 inches of snow on the ground at Christmas time when the kids opened the packages. Since it was snowy outside, they took turns riding them around the living room. THEY ARE A HUGE HIT WITH THE KIDS!”

My 10 year old loves it

“Our 10 year old has balance issues due to her disability, this bike is fantastic, it gives her the freedom of riding a bike while a traditional 2 wheeler isn't an option. Turning circle isn't great for small places, so she's picking it up to turn around - which in itself is fantastic as I can't see many kids being able to do that on a standard bike. It rides great, she is steering fantastically and having a ball getting out and about.”
